Mrs. Padden was a wonderful woman. She was warm and welcoming from the very 1st day i met her. She will be missed by all who knew her.
To her daughters,
I hope you all take time for yourselves. This has been a rough road for you all.

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of Aunt Betty. Always a quiet gentle woman who put her family above all else. You are right about her baking. Her peanut butter cookies were my father's favorite. She shared her recipe with me and whenever I bake them I think of her.

What can I say about Betty that you don’t already know? She was a woman who dedicated her life to being a wife and a mother. She was calm, kind, sensitive, loving, understanding, intuitive, and humble. She had a silly side that allowed her to relate to children and babies. Even though she only made it to her sophomore year in high school, she could trump Dr. Phil any day. She had this uncanny ability to understand human nature. As a child, if we came to her upset over something another child said or did to hurt our feelings, she could explain why that child did what they did and this helped us as children to better understand people and human nature.
She was a devout Catholic and has an unwavering faith in the Lord. She made the best Snicker Doodles and Toll House chocolate chip cookies. As her cookies baked, the sweet smell would waft outside. One day, little Georgie Reeves from next door was so enticed he came knocking on the door, asking, “Can I buy one?” Her home made beef stew with tomato gravy was also a favorite in the neighborhood. More than once my friends would ask, “Is your mother making that stew again? I love that stew.”
She made the most phenomenal Christmas cookies. She could have made a living baking cookies but that is not what she wanted. She wanted to be a wife, mother, grandmother, and a great grand-mother and this is her legacy.
She also loved the early morning quiet, windy days, and beautiful sunsets. She liked music. Perry Como, (“Catch a Falling Star”) was her favorite vocalist and Strauss and Chopin competed for her favorite in classical music. Her hobbies were completing 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles and feeding and watching wild birds. She especially appreciated humming birds and cardinals.
We will hold you in our hearts forever, Mom!
Love,
Mary

My mom was the BEST cookie baker! Toll house cookies were the favorite and somehow hers were unique.
I'm grateful to have had her for my mom. She was generous with her time--she always had time to talk on the phone or at the kitchen table over cups of tea.
It really is sad that toward the end, she didn't remember even the earliest parts of her life. I'm glad she is at peace now and her spirit has been freed.
