Obituary of John M. Tomko

John M. Tomko, Sr., age 90, passed away on December 8, 2020. Born on January 6, 1930, John was raised in Hazelton, PA, and then lived in Pitman over 52 years. John served in the US Coast Guard from 1950-1953, and was a champion boxer during his service. After the Coast Guard, John began a career with the New Jersey State Police in Woodstown, NJ, and later was stationed to a number of barracks throughout New Jersey. During his career with the State Police, he acquired his master's degree in Phycology from Stockton State College. John retired from the New Jersey State Police with the rank of Lieutenant and then continued to work as a Hearing Officer at the NJ DMV until the age of 80. John was an accomplished banjo player and member of the Palmyra, Ferko, and Hegeman string bands. His love of music continued on throughout his life, also playing violin and saxophone. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. John was an amazing man who was full of kindness, and loved being with his family. He was, and will always be, an inspiration to his family and many others. In September, John was predeceased by his daughter Shirley. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Marie E. (nee Butrica), children Marie (Ross) Hatton, John Jr. (Nancy), William (Amanda), grandchildren Kenny Kocher, Chelsea and Kelly Hatton, John, Katie, Russell, Tyler, Timothy and Matthew Tomko, great grandchildren Ariana, Kenny, John, Michael, Alaina, Isabella, and siblings Annie and Robert Tomko. Graveside service will be 1pm on Saturday, December 19, 2020 in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Delsea Dr, Washington Twp.
