The Donaldson family posted a condolence

Dear Betty and family,
We cherish the memories of being neighbors with you for many years. Our impromptu chats in the yard with Ray showed us his love for his family, especially his grandchildren, and for his church and baseball. Ray loved life and was eager to share that with others. We always felt he looked out for us and that he was a father figure to us. Ray will be greatly missed by so many as he was loved by so many. There is one thought we can hang onto...we know we will see him in heaven. Thank God for that. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Love, Doug, Mary and Paige

John and I are very sorry to hear of Ray John's passing. We will always remember the kindness of Ray John and his love of life and baseball. I'm sure John and Ray shared many "commentaries" about Phillies games, coaches, players, etc. We pray God's comfort over your family at this difficult time. John and LuAnn Tomlinson

In truth I really didn't know Ray exceptionally well, but I'll always fondly remember a kind gesture, or rather a "random act of kindness" he extended to me 25+ years ago, after my father's death.
I met Ray (where else?) but at a Pitman HS baseball game. As I stood watching the game next to this "older" gentleman, we started to chat, just talking baseball.
After a while, he said "if we're gonna talk baseball, I should know your name." When I told him who I was, he waited several minutes, then asked me where I grew up. When I told him, his stare grew stern and he asked me, in a serious tone, who my father was. I wondered to myself if I had somehow offended him.
When I told him who my father was, he quickly turned to face me and said, almost nose to nose, "I'm happy to meet you. I knew your father. Your father was a great guy, a REALLY great guy. I worked with him for over 20 years and I can't tell you how much fun we had together."
Well Ray didn't know it, and I never told him so, but the kind words he said to me that day will never be forgotten.
Even today with I think about it, those few words still bring a smile to my face. It was wonderful to know someone thought my Dad was a great guy.
And, even though I saw Ray many times over the years, mostly at sporting events,I never told him how much that "random act of kindness" meant to me.
So to Ray's family- I hope it brings you comfort- as Ray's words did for me- to know how many people think your Dad (husband/grand-dad/great granddad)was a REALLY great guy!

I am mother of Blake Ortiz, he is living in NY...did let him know this am...Mr John took my son under his wing when he was 9 yrs old and we met then @ Bill Robinson's..another dear friend.
Always kept in touch here and there, especially @ ball games, Mr John taught Blake not only baseball, but the meaning of life. Always felt like a father to me and a grandfather to Blake...he has left behind an influence on us that enriched out lives and taught us many things. A tough coach to play for, but expected the best from you and no less, because he believed in you which was his calling card. I thought of him seeing not only our Lord, but his family which has passed before him, and even Bill Robinson and Ted Williams whom he was in the service with. What baseball stories they will catch up on. Mrs. John, i feel your loss deeply, and please tell Rick/Betsy, and the kids we feel their loss also and lean on your faith.

I always enjoyed seeing the glimmer in Ray's eyes when he was down visiting the grandkids in Linwood. He would stop me after Rick's services and talk about any number of things from spiritual, to sports, to his flying days. He would leave you feeling inspired in some way. I appreciated getting to know him in the years we attended Linwood Comm Church.
