To my good friend Helen and her family.
Helen and I have been friends since our first year in high school, almost 80 years. That's fantastic to think about!
We met and instantly became friends because we sat together in home room. My last name being Roussin and hers, Ruskin. We were seated alphabetically.
Some of my early memories with Helen were English Class with the tough old Bulldog Miss Moore. She put the fear of proper grammar into us.
The winters were much colder back then, and during recess we would huddle next to the corner chimney outside to stay warm and gossip.
Then there was the time we had driver's education. I was driving and Helen and Horst were in the back seat as observers . Well, I drove over the RR tracks way too fast and launched poor Helen and Horst into the roof!
Helen and I were also both on the debating team in high school. We would go to the Bridgeton Radio Station and debate live on the air with other high schools regarding various subjects. Helen was very good at debating as she liked to argue (smile)
Helen and I also played field hockey. We both fondly remembered our bruised shins.
Helen embraced new technology in the kitchen. When the Amana RadarRange microwave first came out, she bought one and decided to cook a Turkey dinner with it. Way back then the microwaves didn't work so well, and the turkey came out burned in the middle and raw on the outside. We laughed about this together not too long ago.We both had the same sense of humor.
I remember Helen's house in Pitman. She was a very gifted gardener and had beautiful flowers everywhere and a rare white Magnolia tree.
I will miss you Helen, your friend Miriam Roussin Young
