When I joined the # 1 fire department, Bob greeted me and his leadership there was appreciated. As we became friends we shared family time with his family. Always upbeat and positive. I shared hunting trips with him and was a great guide with lots of experience. He measured and weight my grandsons first fish. Always the great volunteer. He has departed but will be missed and left a great family to continue his outstanding legacy. Thanks Bob.

My best memories of Bob were when Sandy, Wade and Joey, were young and their Dad would talk to them in his fun loving, silly way. The kids loved it! He was a good Dad! Bob will be missed.

Carol and I have known this man for a lot of years; from grade school until his passing. Carol was his campaign manager in high school, when he ran for class president (PHS63). Played some football together; but Bob was more interested in baseball.
Years later, I worked for him, after I retired, at Alcyon Park. We all enjoyed working with Bob, when he was the Superintendent. There was Roy, Jared, Andy, Jeff, and Joe. It was a good mix of guys that got along well and worked well with Bob. He made it easy and fun to work with him.
Then, there was some 10 plus years that Bob went with my son, Jeff, and I to our cousin's farm in Virginia, every year, deer hunting. I think my cousin Mary Margaret (farm owner) wanted to adopt Bob into the family, she liked him that much. Too many great times and stories to mention with a few deer, to boot. We all loved, liked and enjoyed being with and around Bob. God Bless YOU, Bob, and your family, as well. John, Carol, Jeff and Jen Leach

Pitman has truly lost one of her favorite sons.
As an Assistant Chief under Chief Charlie Brown, Bob guided a large number of new recruits through their training and development as Pitman Fire Company No.1 moved into the 1970's. There were many new firefighting techniques and revolutionary developments in equipment. Volunteer Fire Departments were becoming more involved in Rescue work and Emergency Medicine. In Gloucester County, Pitman was a leader in transforming Emergency Services into what we have come to expect today and Bob played an important role in that development.
Under his leadership, Pitman saw large numbers of members become EMT's and graduates of the N.J. State Fire College and Rescue School. One of the first "Jaws of Life" was placed in service in Pitman and responded to crashes throughout the County.
Bob was intelligent, a natural leader and easy to talk with. The Fire Company is made up of a variety of individuals with various interests and talents. He supported those interests and provided educational opportunities that made Pitman one of the best trained departments in the area.
One of the best decisions I ever made was to join Pitman Fire Company No.1. Bob Shoemaker had a lasting impact on my life.
Thanks Bob.
