Susan's passing saddens me more than I can express. She was born as I was moving into young adulthood and leaving for college and I, unfortunately, was not able to spend as much time with her as I wish had. We were from two different time periods and yet part of the same generation of Doughertys, a bond that remains strong regardless of distance or time. Although often quiet, Susan made her presence known. She worked hard and always strove to improve herself, which is a sign of true grit. She obviously adored her nieces and nephews and seemed to spend every second she could with them. Her father, my uncle, is one of the kindest and gentlest men I have ever known (despite his large stature). Regardless of the time that has passed, he drops everything to stand by your side. I am heartbroken that I cannot do the same for him. He loves Susan with every fiber of his being. She is the light of his life and, from what I could tell from social media and a handful of encounters in recent years, his partner in "crime". To Mark and Ryan and their families, my heart is with you as you navigate these days of great sorrow. I am far in distance but near in heart.

Meeting Susan was a privilege. From the first day I walked into Things Remembered, seeing her zipping around helping everyone in need, to me recruiting her to DSW. I feel honored to have had the chance to work with someone who was kind, caring, and such a hard worker! No matter what was thrown her way, Susan conquered her job and was always there for her coworkers even in their time of need. I will never forget all of the fun we have had. Those memories will be in my heart forever!

I am at such a loss of words… working with Susan was an absolute pleasure. She was always someone I could talk to and enjoy a good laugh with…something we got to do often. Not everything was easy though, but she was there for me in those times when I needed her most. Even though she called me her boss, I am happy to call have called her a friend. I am going to miss her dearly.
