Dear Sharon and Family,
I’ve been struck off and on with moments of melancholy since I learned that “Aunt Mabel” finally went to be with the Lord. Not sadness, because all my memories of her were pleasant ones…and 97 years was a good, long life…and her reunions in heaven have undoubtedly been joyous. I think my feelings have had more to do with the recognition that one more person who impacted my life has passed on. That’s happening more and more these days, and every time it does, it feels like a little part of me goes with them. Your mon (Sharon) was an amazing, hard-working woman with a pioneer spirit—as were all of those people who carved Haluwasa out of an abandoned bog. All of the kids and adults who've passed through the camp ever since and had their lives impacted are part of her legacy.
As a first grader, I remember waiting until the Moores got off the party line and then calling 561-4105 to see if you wanted to meet at the Tabernacle and play. Your mom usually answered the phone; I remember her being so warm and kind to a kid. I also remember those winter storms and you and your dad in army truck #4 and me and my dad in army truck #6 plowing snow all over Winslow Township. With call letters 3Q-11-13 we would talk to each other on the CB radios. When we got back to the camp, “Aunt Mabel” would radio that she had hot chocolate heated for us in the dining hall. She was the initial responder to render first aid to me when I fell off the Egg Harbor cabin floor joists and put a hole through my lip. I remember her pleasant voice singing in the Ladies Trio at the Sunday Afternoon Meetings, and doing solos with the Choir & Orchestra. And for some reason, I remember her mink stole with a Mabel Green label sewn into the yoke. I always thought that was pretty classy. So many more memories…
Please know that Mabel McGinnis—actually the entire McGinnis family—will always be appreciated and remembered fondly. Too many miles and too little time will likely prohibit me from joining you in Pitman on January 11, but be assured that I’ll be with you in spirit.
With Much Love,
John Ashmen

P.S. And heartfelt greetings and condolences to Janet and family. I was shocked to learn that Don preceded his mom in death by just a few days. I wonder if Mabel stepped into heaven to the sounds of a trombone and bass saxophone.
